Hello everyone! Based on the writing assignment that had been given to me in the UX Writing Workshop: How to Make Users Love Your Product with UX Copy on August 21st (https://azsalsabila.medium.com/ux-writing-workshop-how-to-make-users-love-your-product-with-ux-copy-7107c7cdf594), I got inspired to make another UX Copy for my application UI Design — “CookTube”.

For the beginning, “CookTube” is my application that had been made the UI Design for the assignments in the GEC Intensive Program: Master The Basics of UI UX. That program was held from February 25th — March 1st, 2021.

For information, the explanation about how I worked on those assignments has already been uploaded on my Medium and blog account. The links are https://azsalsabila.medium.com/hasil-pembelajaran-gec-intensive-program-master-the-basics-of-ui-ux-6bad067cd76c and https://azsalsabila.medium.com/ux-writing-workshop-how-to-make-users-love-your-product-with-ux-copy-7107c7cdf594. You can also share your thoughts there if you want. 😊

“CookTube” is an application that aims to share cooking video tutorials — just like YouTube, but only the cooking videos. CookTube was made because of the hobby majority of people to cook during the pandemic era.

Therefore, in this blog, I want to share if the CookTube is made with a good and proper UX copy. For making a nice branding for this app, I intend to make the UX copy a friendly, bright, and helpful tone for the users.

CookTube has three main features to try with the users. They also need to be written down on the onboarding pages. The main features are:

a. Browse the cooking videos.

b. Capture the ingredients.

c. Save the cooking videos to your CookTube gallery.

Feature #1 — Onboarding Page

a. Browse the cooking videos

Title:

Browse, search, and choose your cooking videos.

Explanation:

Based on the voice and tone guideline for the CookTube application, I need to make a friendly and helpful copy. Then, the words ‘browse, search and choose’ have the right description to the users. They would have a clear description in the CookTube application. They could not just search the videos — but browse and get to choose the cooking videos that they’re looking for.

Reason and learning process:

The sentences ‘browse, search and choose your cooking videos’ has it all. It summarizes the capability from one of the main features in the CookTube. Users can browse, search, and then choose whether the right cooking videos for them to watch and learn cooking.

b. Capture the ingredients

Title:

Still figuring out the ingredients yet? Capture and you’ll find out.

Explanation:

This is the important feature in the CookTube app that needs to be tried by the users. If the users still don’t know the name of the ingredients that they’re gonna use, they can capture it and will know what the names of the ingredients are.

The feature is quite essential considering that this app is aimed at the beginner home cooks out there who learn to cook in this pandemic era.

Reason and learning process:

The users who are still figuring out what are the names of the ingredients that they’re gonna use could feel related to this copy. With the sentences ‘capture and you’ll find out’ make a clear statement that the users could capture the ingredients and find out the names are.

c. Save the cooking videos to your CookTube gallery

Title:

Don’t want to lose the videos? Save them to your gallery.

Explanation:

Another important feature in the CookTube. By giving the encouragement with ‘don’t want to lose the videos?’, the users will get interested and try the ‘save the videos’ features to their gallery. So that they can watch the videos anywhere and anytime they like.

Reason and learning process:

One of the biggest concerns when learning something new is that the tutorials (the videos, the how-to) could be missing and couldn’t be found anywhere, although we often like them and made them our ‘favorites’. However, the users feel more secure if they could save the videos to their gallery. Starting the sentences with ‘don’t want to lose the videos?’ is making a clear statement about the users’ concerns, then the next sentences are about the solution — ‘save them to your gallery’. Thus, the users’ concerns could be solved in this app.

Feature #2 — Push Notification

When learning something new, it’s crucial to know what are the video tutorials in the app that the users need to watch. The notification will appear when the users start following the account that posted the videos, and after the app learns what kind of recipes or dishes which the users learning for.

Notification #1

Title: New videos alert! 🔔

Description: Wanna learn more about how to make a tasty beef burger? Watch here.

Reason and learning process:

According to the previous voice and tone guidelines, I made a title in this first push notification with an ‘alert’ for the users — plus, with a ring bell emoticon.

On the description line, there’s a question about learning how to make a new recipe. Therefore the users could easily find out what the new videos are, and they can decide to watch them by the action call sentences ‘watch here’.

Notification #2

Title: Delizioso, it’s pasta! 😋

Description: Gordon Ramsay has uploaded a new video about cooking pasta. Click here to watch.

Reason and learning process:

Voice and tone guidelines about being friendly, bright, and helpful are also valid in this Notification #2. ‘Delizioso, it’s pasta! 😋’ meant so that the users would know that the latest video is about pasta dishes. On the description part, I made a statement of who just uploaded a new video about the pasta cooking video. Last but not least, a ‘call to action’ sentence for the users to click the notification to watch the cooking video.

Feature #3 — Error message

This feature #3 is intended to make a copy of an error message based on the internet connection in the CookTube app. Besides that, I also make an illustration to represent the error message.

the picture belongs to the author. the background is from pikisuperstar on https://www.freepik.com/free-vector/hand-drawn-delicious-food-background_5107183.htm#page=1&query=food%20doodle&position=0&from_view=search

Illustration explanation:

The illustration beside has a simple UI design with the cross-wifi logo, giving the meaning with ‘no internet connection’ error message. It also has a green color — the master color of the CookTube app and the food doodle as the transparent background.

Under the cross-wifi logo, and the error message, there’s a CTA (call to action) button with ‘Try again’ sentences. Telling the users to click the button to try to reconnect again.

Error message:

Title: No internet connection

Description: Your connection is having problems. Please check your Wi-Fi or cellular data and try again

CTA (Call To Action): Try again

Reason and learning process:

As I browse more about the error message UX copy — for the examples like Gojek UX Writing (https://www.gojek.io/blog/how-we-make-the-go-jek-app-come-alive) or Dribbles (https://dribbble.com/tags/no_internet#), I learned that to tell the users about the error message it needs to be concise and helpful. Users tend to feel panic and anxious about having an internet connection issue in the middle of their activity in the app.

Therefore, by telling the users with the message ‘Your connection is having problems. Please check your Wi-Fi or cellular data and try again’ to state the connection issue, and ask them to try again with the connection. After that message, users are called to take the action by clicking the CTA button to try again for real.

Finally, the making of UX Writing Copy for the “CookTube” application is done for now. What do you have in mind? I hope this writing makes a good impact with our learnings on UX writing and UI design as well.

You can tell your thoughts in the comment down below and we can share each other. Thank you.😊
